Corner space being prepared for arrival of gas fireplace - gas line & electrical supply. Note we had to remove a thru-the-wall air conditioner higher up the wall.

A platform is prepared to accept the fireplace. Some stone is being staged just to help with strategy for the overall design.

Platform complete and the unit was delivered, connected and tested.

Here we have started to prepare the base and chimney for stone work as well as a knotty pine mantle that was going to be stained for a rustic look.

We used concrete backer-board over an oriented strand board base.

Here is another shot of the unit as we decide NOT to go with the stained knotty pine rustic look.

Knotty pine is OUT . . . going with clear pine and we will be painting the mantle a hearty bergundy

Wood primer paint has been applied.

Stonework has started. The mantle has the first coat of paint. Customer seems happy so far.

Side shot of project as stonework on chimney has started and first coat of paint is drying.

Note that the stone work for the base starts from the top and goes down. Fighting gravity here is important so that the fireplace looks like it was installed on top of the stone and not contrived.

More progress . . . and the fire is ON. The unit is controlled with a wall switch that has room thermostat, flame level and circulation fan settings available.

The stone for the base is complete. We wanted a "stacked stone" look for this project.

The last chimney stone going in. Time for a break.

Project essentially complete with the exception of one last coat of paint for the wood mantle work and the installation of a few ornaments for Christmas (this project ended on the 17th of December).

Recently a regular renovation customer asked us to install and build a natural gas fireplace fixture with natural stone base, wood mantle and stone chimney. They purchased the fireplace and provided us with rough-in dimensions. The final design emerged during the build process as selected materials presented some challenges.
